LSCI 100:
INTRODUCTION TO INFORMATION RESEARCH
DIRECTIONS FOR COMPLETING AND SUBMITTING
ASSIGNMENTS
This
course requires you to complete 6 lessons, a final project and a final
exam. These are all found under “Calendar of Lessons”
on the course home page. The due dates
are also given on the “Calendar of Lessons” page.
To do the
work in this course, you need to be familiar with basic operations of Web browsers
(including highlighting, copying and pasting) and the use of multiple windows
(e.g. Ctrl-N opens a new window and you can move between windows by clicking on
the tabs for each window at the bottom of the screen.)
Each lesson has a reading, a tutorial and
an assignment. Begin each lesson by completing the reading
and tutorial. Then move on to the
assignment. Since each assignment
requires you to refer to concepts in the reading, to use an online search tool
and to complete the assignment in an email message, you will need to open
multiple windows and click back and forth between multiple windows in your web
browser.
To do an assignment, follow these directions:
* Click on the “Assignment” link for the lesson you are working on.
* When the assignment you want to complete is displayed, highlight all of the
text (Ctrl-A), and copy it (Ctrl-C).
* At the top left of each assignment page, there is a link titled “E-Mail
Services (new window).” Click on this
link to open a new window with links to most common Web email sites. Link to your email site, log in and open a
new email message (called “compose” in many email sites).
[If you use
an email program (e.g. Outlook Express) on your computer rather than a
web-based email service, you need to open the email program instead of opening
an email service in your browser.]
Click in
the body of the message and paste (Ctrl-V) the assignment text into a new
message.
* In the email message, fill in your answers
after each question.
When necessary, you will need to click to other windows in order to answer
questions. You may need to go to:
- the assignment page to click on various links,
- to the reading to review concepts,
- to the tutorial to review directions for using a search tool, or
- to a search tool to perform a search
Remember that you can open a new window by clicking Ctrl-N and then you can move
between windows by clicking on the tabs for each window at the bottom of the
screen.
* To turn
in an assignment, send an e-mail message to your instructor with "LSCI 100 Assignment #" in the
subject line and the assignment number.
Copy the correct instructor’s email address in the To: box.
* If you
pasted the questions and entered all of your answers in the email, you are
ready to send it to the instructor. (To
have a backup copy of your assignment, be sure that your email program saves a
copy of your sent messages or copy your completed assignment into a Word file and save it in an identified
folder on your computer.)
* If you
have not completed answering all of the questions but you need to take a break
in your work, you can save your work as a draft
(in most email systems) and then, when you come back to continue working on the
assignment, you can go to your “Drafts” folder, select the message you had been
working on, then complete the assignment and send the message.
