SKYLINE COLLEGE LIBRARY

Demonstration Library Assignment #1

TOPIC EXPLORATION & SEARCH PREPARATION

Reading:

1. Briefly (but clearly) describe a topic that you would be interested in researching.

It's good to try to be specific, but since this is just the beginning of your research process, you can start by just telling us what you are generally interested in researching.

2. Preliminary periodical search on InfoTrac OneFile Database:
Find at least one article related to your research topic using the InfoTrac OneFile Database.

Do a keyword search and give the following information for your search:

3. What were the exact search words you used?

4. After entering your search, you'll be given a list of citations. (If you get no results, or only records that are inappropriate to your topic, try synonymous or broader search terms, or ask instructor for help.) How many citations were retrieved for your search?

5. Choose one article that's relevant to your topic and provide the following information:

a. Title of article

b. Author(s)

c. Source (name of the periodical)

d. Date

e. Volume # and issue # (if given)

f. The beginning page of the article and the number of pages of the article

g. Does an abstract accompany the citation?

h. Does the full-text of the article accompany the citation?

i. Is this article from a popular magazine (or newspaper) or a scholarly journal? Review Popular Magazines vs. Scholarly Journals for clarification.

j. Is this publication available at Skyline Library? Yes or No (circle your answer)

k. Remaining at the full display for the article you've chosen, carefully examine the subject headings. In many cases you will discover subject headings relevant to your research topic that you probably wouldn't have thought of on your own.
List all the subject headings for your article that seem especially relevant to your topic.

5. E-MAIL YOURSELF THE FULL RECORD FOR THE ARTICLE YOU'VE CHOSEN
