Magazine & Journal Databases (to access articles):

InfoTrac OneFile Database: excellent general periodical database.
Available from off-campus--as long as you have a library card (library card bar code number is required).
 
  • To search only for articles that include the full text (the whole article) in the database, check the "articles with text" box under "Limit the current search" (below the text entry box)
  • To narrow searches, combine concepts with AND.
  • Once you find one article specifically on your topic, click on any relevant subject headings (near the bottom of the article page) to find more articles on that topic.

Gale History Resource Center - U.S.: Primary documents, reference articles, and full-text journal articles covering all aspects of U.S. history.
Available from off-campus--as long as you have a library card (PLS library card bar code number is required).

Proquest Newpapers database: a database of full-text articles from many of the most important newspapers in the country--New York Times, S. F. Chronicle, S. F. Examiner, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, L. A. Times & Christian Science Monitor--as well as some regional papers from Northern California. Only available from on campus (library or computer labs).

  • Select all databases by clicking on Continue.

SIRS Knowledge Source: a database of all full-text articles on social issues from a wide range of magazines and newspapers, only available from on campus (library or computer labs)

The PLS WebPAC is the online catalog to find books in Skyline Library and in all libraries in the Peninsula Library Sytem.

General Info on Popular Topical Issues:

Public Agenda Online: This site addresses 18 controversial issues: abortion, America's global role, crime,the economy, education, the government, the family, the federal budget, gambling, health care, illegal drugs, immigration, Internet speech / privacy, Medicare, race,right to die, social security, and welfare. Extensive information on each issue includes an overview, facts and trends, different perspectives, links to news stories, and results of public opinion polls.

Laws and Legal Documents:

FindLaw: Internet Legal Resources: The best single starting point on the Web for doing legal research. Full text searchable database of all law reviews and journals on the Internet. Updated nightly. Another search interface, LawCrawler, helps you focus your search on legal issues on the Web. Also includes Legal News, legal forms, organizations, law firms and lawyers, judicial opinions and case law, consultants, and more.

Internet Law Library: Contains links to over 7,500 law related resources in subjects such as U.S. federal laws, state and territorial laws, international laws, laws of all jurisdictions arranged by subject, attorney and legal professional directories, law school library catalogs and directories, and reviews of law books. The current U.S. Code and Code of Federal Regulations can also be searched from the home page.

THOMAS: Legislative Information on the Internet: Access the full text of bills from the current Congress back through the 101st. Search the daily Congressional Record for terms, then read the full text of relevant proceedings and proposed legislation. Or enter the name of a particular legislator and access his or her voting record. Also has the roll call votes of the House and Senate from the 101st Congress to date.

Government Documents:

Frequently Used Sites Related to U.S. Federal Government Information: This is a directory of links to popular government documents on the Internet. The links are organized by topics including major government indexes, business, crime, census, congress, consumer information, copyright, education, foreign countries, health, impeachment, natural resources, law, and scientific reports.

University of Michigan Government Documents Center: Excellent meta-index of local, national, and international government information.
