What is Telecom, Wireless
and Network Info Technology?
It
is the transmission of information through satellite, optical fibers,
copper wires, telephone, radio or television. The telecommunications
industry includes companies involved in the design, manufacture, sales
or service of equipment used in the transmission of sound and data.
Included in this industry are the companies and professionals that work
with wireless and network technologies, as well as telecommunications.
Wireless technologies are those that use radio, satellite, laser and
infra-red transmissions to deliver data for networks or phone systems.
Network technologies are those that deal with the communications between
computers, whether locally connected or geographically distant. Telecommunications
technology deals with the various methods of communications used by
the various phone companies, either through a physical medium or via
wireless transmission.
What
is the TCOM Program?
The
TCOM programs have been designed to serve students entering the field
as well as those who are seeking to upgrade their skills in specific
areas of telecommunications or network information. As our society continues
to expand into the information age, the most important jobs will involve
communications. A telecommunications, network or wireless technician
today is a member of an elite team of specialists who create the future.
Instruction
includes the theory as well as practical application of telecommunications,
wireless and networks, as well as other related areas. Students can receive
endorsements in specific skill areas as they pursue their Associate Degree.
Some students are able to find employment after completing a portion of
the program and continue their education while gaining valuable work experience.
Students may receive the Telecommunications
Technology, Network or PC
Repair Certificates, Endorsement Certificates
or Industry Certifications independent of
their Associate Degree studies.
What does the program offer?
• Activity-based hands-on programs designed
with direct employment skills and knowledge as their foundation.
• Instruction centered on the current technologies of the Telecommunications,
Networking and Wireless industry.
• Programs designed to prepare students for industry certifications.
• Programs that allow both entry and experienced students to join
at different levels of instruction.
• Programs of established reputation and backed by industry proven
track records.
• Affiliation with programs such as the Cisco CCNA certification.
• CompTIA A+ and Checkpoint certifications.
How long will the program
take?
A student attending full time can receive
a Telecommunications and Wireless Technology Certificate in eighteen
months. A student attending full time can receive a Network Engineering
Certificate in two years. Completion
of the Associates degree will take longer and will depend upon how many
units a student is able to carry at one time. Our program is available
for both day and evening students.
How much will it
cost?
Student fees are assessed by the number of enrolled
units per semester. Books, a few tools, parking permits and health fees
will also need to be purchased. College
fees
What qualifications
and skills will be needed?
Good math, communications and basic computer
skills are essential. The technician must have excellent color vision,
be able to lift and carry objects weighing twenty-five pounds or more,
be able to manipulate hand tools and small objects and be able to work
efficiently and accurately under pressure.
Since
the telecommunications and network industry opportunities are extremely
varied, the skills and specializations are varied as well. A technician
must possess knowledge of basic electrical theory and electronics. Skills
such as wiring, assembly, reading circuits, computer hardware repair,
using hand tools and test equipment may be required. Advanced skills include
knowledge of data transmission systems, voice switching networks, wireless,
fiber optics and other advanced communication systems.
