Thank you for your interest in the Respiratory Therapy Program cosponsored by Skyline College and City College of San Francisco.

Students are admitted into the program once a year only, in the Fall semester. Approximately 25 students are admitted to the program each year. Selection is based on criteria approved by the Skyline College Administration and consistent with state regulations. For further information on the Respiratory Therapy Program, please call 738-4457.

Full-time registration is required, and all courses must be taken in sequence. Credit may be given for previous coursework. Minimum grade of C is required in all coursework. An Associate Degree is required to take the Respiratory Care Practitioner Exam administered by the California Respiratory Care Board. To determine specific General Education requirements, applicants are encouraged to contact the Counseling Department.

Admission to the Respiratory Therapy Program requires the following minimum entrance requirements:

  1. Meet all college admission requirements.

  2. Presently enrolled in or completed, with a C or better, the following (it is recommended these prerequisites have been completed within the past five years):

    1. Algebra equivalent to MATH 110 or 112.

    2. Chemistry equivalent to CHEM 192 or 410.

    3. Human Anatomy equivalent to BIOL 250.

    4. (Note: Human Anatomy may be taken in the summer session preceding the program.)

  3. English: Eligibility for Skyline College ENGL 836 or equivalent.

Please read all instructions carefully before completing the application. It is very important to read the program and career information packets. All application materials should be returned between January 15 and May 1 to be considered for the Fall Program. If space is still available the application period will be reopened. Please keep these instructions for future reference.

To be considered for admission to the Respiratory Therapy Program all applicants must:

    1. Meet all college admission requirements.

    2. Submit a completed Respiratory Therapy Program Application.

    3. Submit a completed Skyline College application if you have not attended Skyline College the prior semester.

    4. Submit official transcripts for all academic work attempted or completed.

    5. Submit three (3) letters of recommendation. Standard forms are included with this packet. A general letter is acceptable addressing the qualities in the standard form. Please read the instructions on the reference form before giving them to the recommenders.

The following are suggested categories for recommenders:

    1. Dean, counselor, principal

    2. Teacher or instructor

    3. Health care workers

    4. Employer or supervisor

    5. Leaders of community organizations (volunteer, church or club)

Do not submit recommendations from relatives.

Note:

  1. Allow 3-4 weeks for transcript delivery

  2. Mail transcripts to Admissions and Records, not the Respiratory Therapy Program.

  3. Foreign transcripts will need evaluation by:

The application process is the following:

Return all completed materials to Skyline College within the application period.

  1. It is the applicants responsibility to insure their application is complete

  2. Only completed applications will be forwarded to the Respiratory Therapy Department for consideration.

  3. All applicants meeting prerequisites will be accepted into the program. If more applications are received than space allows, a lottery system will be set up. Twenty five applicants will be accepted. A waiting list will also be formed.

  4. Accepted applicants will be notified by mail and given an orientation date.

  5. Prior to the start of the Fall Semester all students must have Human Anatomy (BIOL 250) completed. This can be taken during the summer semester. The course fills very quickly so try to register early if you need this course. It will be the student's responsibility to complete this course and maintain eligibility for the Fall program.

  6. If you need financial aid for the Fall semester, please check early with the financial aid office.

Important: The California Respiratory Care Board adopted the following regulation:

All applicants for licensure as a respiratory care practitioner are required to hold at the minimum, an Associate Degree. This will include all applicants for the July 2000 Respiratory Care Practitioner examination.

The State of California Respiratory Care Board requires as the minimum an Associate degree to take the licensure exam.
